Description

A complete Chinese gongfu cha ceremony set in luxury porcelain with a tray. Gongfu cha: literally “tea with skill”: is the traditional Chinese approach to brewing tea in which small quantities are steeped many times in rapid succession, with each infusion revealing a different dimension of the tea’s character.

What is included in this Chinese tea ceremony set?

  • Porcelain teapot: Small-volume pot designed for multiple short steepings
  • Tea strainer: Filters loose leaf tea into the fairness pitcher
  • Fairness pitcher (gong dao bei): Equalises the brew before pouring into cups so every cup is the same strength
  • 4 teacups: Small cups for appreciating colour, aroma and flavour in sequence
  • Tea tray: Catches water and tea from rinsing and overflow

Which teas are best for gongfu cha?

Oolong teas (Tie Guan Yin, Da Hong Pao, Black Oolong), premium black teas (Jin Jun Mei, Yunnan Golden Thread) and aged Pu-erh all produce rewarding multi-steep sessions. The small teapot volume is intentional: use 5–7g of tea per 100ml and steep for 20–30 seconds per infusion, increasing by 10 seconds each round. Expect 6–8 quality steepings from a single session. Pu-erh is traditionally brewed this way too: a quick rinse infusion opens the compressed leaf before the tasting infusions begin.

Frequently asked questions

What is gongfu cha? Gongfu cha (功夫茶) is a Chinese tea ceremony style focused on repeated short steepings of a small quantity of high-quality loose-leaf tea. The process emphasises the evolution of the tea’s flavour across multiple infusions.

Is this the same as a regular teapot set? No. Gongfu cha sets use a much smaller teapot (typically 100–200ml) and tiny cups (20–40ml) to concentrate flavour and allow controlled tasting across many infusions. A regular teapot is too large.

Does this pair with the Chinese tea collection? Yes. Da Hong Pao, Tie Guan Yin, Jin Jun Mei, Black Oolong, Yunnan Golden Thread and Pu-erh from the Premium Chinese Tea Collection are the ideal companions for this set.
