Description

The grain of the wood runs dark and close, the carved figure holding its posture with a stillness that predates the workshop that shaped it.

Amitabha Buddha, the Buddha of Infinite Light, is the central figure of Pure Land Buddhism, one of the most widely practiced Buddhist traditions across China, Japan, Korea, and Vietnam. His iconography is specific: hands resting in the meditative gesture known as dhyana mudra, expression composed, posture upright. Statues of Amitabha have been placed in homes, temples, and personal altars throughout East Asia for more than fifteen hundred years, serving as focal points for meditation and as physical expressions of the aspiration toward the Pure Land. Wood has been the primary medium for devotional statuary across this tradition, with carvers working in sanctioned iconographic conventions passed down through workshops over centuries.

This statue is hand-carved from either black sandalwood or padauk wood, both dense-grained hardwoods that hold fine detail and darken with age. The figure is carved in the traditional seated posture with hands in the meditative position. Carving is done by hand, with tools suited to the grain of each individual piece of wood. The finish is natural, allowing the wood’s color and texture to remain visible.

Dimensions are not specified. The statue is carved from natural black sandalwood or padauk wood, with the specific wood varying by piece. It is sold as a single statue. Country of origin: China.

The statue is suited for placement on a personal altar, desk, or shelf. No maintenance is required beyond occasional dusting.
