Maitreya, the Buddha of the Future, appears in Buddhist tradition as the awakened being who will arise in a future age. The figure known popularly as the Laughing Buddha draws on the legend of Budai, a wandering Chinese monk of the 10th century whose round belly, wide smile, and sack of gifts became associated over time with Maitreya’s qualities of abundance and goodwill.
