Description

The brown and white feather dreamcatcher is made to hang above a sleeping space, moving with the lightest air current. A cotton web stretched within a willow hoop holds its radial form taut, while natural feathers suspended below on three cord drops respond to the faintest movement in the room.

The willow hoop is 12 centimetres in diameter, wrapped in natural cotton cord, with a hanging loop formed at the top. The web is woven in a radial pattern using waxed cream cotton thread with a small central opening. Brown and white feathers, including turkey and goose varieties, attach to three cord drops below the hoop at staggered lengths. All materials are undyed; the palette is the natural range of the materials themselves. Total length is approximately 45 centimetres and weight is under 80 grams.

Hang this dreamcatcher directly above a bed or in a bedroom window where it can catch a breeze. The hanging loop is ready-formed; no additional fitting is needed beyond a small nail or hook. Its light weight means it will respond to the subtle air movements that heavier wall objects do not register.

The dreamcatcher originates with the Ojibwe people of the Great Lakes region of North America, where small woven objects were hung near sleeping spaces. The central web with its small opening is the functional element: understood to filter, catching what should not pass while allowing the rest through. The form spread across Plains and Woodland nations through trade and kinship. Contemporary makers continue using the original structure of willow hoop, radial thread web, and natural feathers.

How should a dreamcatcher be cleaned? Dust gently with a soft brush or low-power hairdryer on cool setting. Avoid water, which can distort the cotton web and loosen feather quills from their cord attachments. Feathers may be smoothed by hand if they flatten with time.
