Description
The blue feather dream catcher is a hand-assembled threshold object: a cord-wrapped wooden hoop strung with a radial web, cerulean blue feathers hanging from the base on braided cord drops. It is made to occupy the space above a bed or in a window where air movement brings the feathers into gentle motion.
The hoop is formed from a single bent branch approximately 15 centimeters in diameter, wrapped in natural cord to a smooth finish. The web is strung in a radial pattern from the hoop’s inner edge to a central loop, taut and evenly spaced. Cerulean blue feathers, naturally dyed, hang from the base of the hoop on braided cord lengths of 20 to 25 centimeters, with small beads threaded at the joins between cord and feather. Total hanging length is approximately 45 centimeters. Weight is under 50 grams, allowing the piece to hang from a small nail or hook without wall damage.
Hang the dream catcher above a bed, near a window, or in a doorway. A window location allows natural air currents to move the feathers throughout the day. A hook or small nail driven into the ceiling or wall is sufficient for the light weight. For children’s rooms, the piece hangs out of direct reach while remaining visible from the bed.
The dream catcher form originates in Ojibwe tradition, where willow hoops strung with sinew webs were hung above sleeping places as a protective threshold. The practice spread through exchange among First Nations peoples across North America and has since been interpreted and adapted by artisans across many cultures. The cerulean feathers in this piece carry the color of open sky and moving water, a color that recurs across traditions that mark threshold objects with reference to air, passage, and light.
Will the cerulean color fade over time? Natural feather dyes will lighten gradually with prolonged direct sunlight exposure. To preserve the depth of color, hang the dream catcher in a position with indirect or diffuse light rather than directly in front of a south-facing window. The cord and web construction will remain structurally sound regardless of light exposure.
