Description

The black agate Om Mani Padme Hum mala necklace is a 108-bead strand of natural black agate stone, each bead individually hand-engraved with the six-syllable mantra of the Bodhisattva of Compassion. Used in Buddhist mantra recitation practice as a counting tool, it also functions as a wearable necklace for daily use.

The strand consists of 108 counting beads in natural black agate, each 8 mm in diameter, ground to a consistent sphere and hand-engraved with Om Mani Padme Hum filled with white pigment for legibility against the dark stone. One larger guru bead marks the turnaround point during recitation. Beads are individually knotted on braided silk cord, ensuring each bead rests separately against the fingers during use. Total length runs approximately 80 cm. A silk tassel hangs from the guru bead. Origin: Nepal and China.

During mantra recitation, hold the mala in the right hand with the guru bead resting between the index finger and thumb. Move one bead per recitation of Om Mani Padme Hum, working toward the guru bead. At the guru bead, reverse direction rather than crossing it; the guru bead is not counted. The mala can also be worn draped over the wrist or neck between practice sessions. Store it away from direct sunlight to preserve the silk cord and stone surface over time.

Mala necklaces have been used across Buddhist and Hindu traditions for centuries as counting tools during mantra and prayer recitation. 108 is a sacred number in Buddhist cosmology, representing the 108 defilements of the human mind and the 108 volumes of the Tibetan Buddhist canon. The Om Mani Padme Hum mantra is associated with Avalokiteshvara — Guanyin in Chinese tradition — the Bodhisattva of Compassion, and is considered one of the most widely recited mantras in Tibetan and Chinese Buddhism. Black agate, valued for its density and hardness, allows fine engraving without chipping and holds the white pigment fill cleanly over years of use.

Can this mala be worn as a regular necklace when not used for recitation? Yes — at 80 cm in total length, it wears comfortably as a long necklace. The black agate beads with white mantra text make for a striking piece. Many practitioners wear their mala continuously as a reminder of practice and only bring it to hand during formal recitation sessions.
