Wenge comes from the equatorial forests of Central and West Africa, where the tree grows slowly in dense, humid canopy. The wood is known for its extreme density and its straight, tight grain, marked by near-black streaks that give each bead its distinctive depth. Turquoise used in mala construction originates primarily from deposits in Tibet and Iran, stone worn in ceremonial and personal objects for thousands of years. These two lineages, African hardwood and Central Asian stone, are rarely combined. Here they are.

Available in two bead sizes: 6 mm and 8 mm. Both sizes are strung on a durable elastic cord with a larger guru bead and a tassel that marks the strand’s starting point. 108 beads in total, the traditional mala count.
