Description
The plum blossom — meihua — is the first flower of the Chinese year, appearing on bare branches before winter has fully retreated. Here it is printed in white against a ground of deep crimson-rose, a pairing that has appeared in scholar paintings and imperial embroidery since the Tang period: the auspiciousness of the plum multiplied by the energy of red. Pink flowers and mauve-violet accent blooms fill the negative space, giving the composition warmth and fullness.
The crimson ground is saturated enough to hold its own in strong light, but the white blossoms keep the piece from reading as heavy. The combination is among the most classic in Chinese floral textile, and one of the most immediately legible as formally Chinese to a western eye.
