Description
The peonies on this fan are drawn rather than painted — their forms defined by a confident pink outline with a loose, watercolour-style fill that leaves the white ground visible between petals and inside the larger bloom centres. Hot pink plum blossom branches run across the composition, their crisp, smaller forms providing contrast with the larger, more loosely rendered peonies. Deep green leaves add structural weight.
The sketch quality of the design places it between botanical illustration and expressive brushwork — the kind of mark-making that appears in the albums of the late Qing painter Ren Yi (Bonian), where academic precision and spontaneity coexist on the same piece of paper.
