Description
The indigo and navy peonies on this fan are painted in the shuimo (water-ink) brushwork style — the same calligraphic tradition that shaped Chinese landscape and botanical painting for a thousand years. The flowers are large, occupying most of the silk face, their forms defined by layered washes of blue-to-navy rather than outline. Against the white ground, the effect is striking in the way a well-executed monochrome sketch is striking: restrained, confident, precise.
Pink cherry blossom sprigs appear along one edge, their warmth providing the contrast that keeps the composition from reading as purely cool. The palette — indigo, navy, pink, green, white — is one of the cleaner combinations in this range, and the one most suited to interiors where colour is controlled.
