Description
The orchid — lan — is one of the Four Gentlemen of Chinese painting, alongside the plum blossom, bamboo and chrysanthemum. Where plum signifies resilience and bamboo integrity, the orchid carries the quality of hidden virtue: refinement that does not announce itself. On this fan, the orchids are large, painted in dark charcoal in the free-brush style, their forms placed with deliberate asymmetry against a pale ground of grey and mint stripe that reads as cool and architectural.
Small white blossoms scatter across the negative space, providing the compositional counterweight that prevents the large orchid forms from dominating entirely. The result is balanced in the way a well-considered interior is balanced — not symmetrical, but resolved.
