Description

The three-color Tibetan braided bracelet is a hand-woven cord bracelet made by Buddhist monks during the chanted recitation of mantras. A flat, dense plait of three cotton or silk threads in a traditional color combination, it is tied once at the wrist and worn until it falls away naturally, a practice rooted in Tibetan Buddhist monasticism.

The bracelet is woven in three colors, producing a flat, dense plait approximately 1cm wide. Length accommodates most adult wrists, with a sliding knot that allows adjustment across a range of circumferences. The surface texture is tight and even, with the color pattern repeating in a clean diagonal down the plait’s length. Weight is negligible: the bracelet is nearly imperceptible on the wrist. Multiple color combinations are available, each produced in the same construction, the same knot sequence, and the same care.

The bracelet is tied at the wrist at the time of receipt or during a personal moment of intention. It is traditionally worn on the left wrist, considered the receiving side in Tibetan practice. The sliding knot allows the fit to be adjusted before the final knot is set. The bracelet is worn continuously until the natural degradation of the thread causes it to fall away; it is not removed and replaced like a conventional bracelet.

The practice of weaving protective cords is rooted in Tibetan Buddhist monasticism, centered in the Tibet Autonomous Region and in exile communities in Dharamsala and Kathmandu. Monks braid these cords during chanted recitation, each pass of thread made within the mantra being spoken. Color corresponds to tradition: red and gold for protection, saffron for renunciation, black as a grounding tone. The bracelet’s meaning is embedded in its making.

A question many buyers have is how long a Tibetan braided bracelet typically lasts before falling away. The answer depends on wear conditions. Cotton thread in daily contact with water, sweat, and physical activity degrades over several months. Silk thread tends to last longer, often six months to a year. In drier climates or with lighter daily wear, the bracelet may last considerably longer. The falling away is understood within the tradition as the natural completion of the intention set at the time of tying.
