Description

The Shakyamuni Buddha Statue in Copper is a hand-burnished copper sculpture of the historical Buddha, produced by Newar artisans in the Kathmandu Valley using the traditional lost-wax casting method. Available in two sizes — small at approximately 12 to 15 cm and large at approximately 25 to 30 cm — it is suited to personal altars, meditation rooms, and serious devotional or scholarly collections.

The statue is cast in copper using the lost-wax process, then hand-burnished to bring the surface to a warm metallic sheen, with selective cold patina applied in the recessed areas of the robes and throne base to create visual depth without obscuring the iconometric proportions. Newar craftsmen follow strict iconometric measurements derived from Buddhist canonical texts — the ushnisha, elongated earlobes, and meditative posture are all rendered to canonical proportion. The statue arrives in a cotton pouch for safe storage and transport.

Place the statue on a clean, elevated surface — an altar shelf or table is traditional. Newar copper statues are often consecrated with mantras and small offerings before entering regular use; for those who observe these practices, the ritual is performed by a lama or senior practitioner. For secular display, the statue sits stably on its integral base on any flat surface and requires no mounting. Dust occasionally with a dry soft cloth; avoid water or cleaning agents on the copper surface.

The Newar community of the Kathmandu Valley has been producing Buddhist sacred art — statues, ritual objects, and architectural decorations — for over a thousand years, supplying monasteries, temples, and private patrons from Tibet to Japan. Their lost-wax tradition for solid and hollow copper casting is recognized as among the finest surviving metal iconography practices in the world. Shakyamuni — the historical Buddha, Siddhartha Gautama — is depicted here in the earth-witness (bhumisparsha) pose at the moment of enlightenment under the Bodhi tree, the foundational iconographic form across all Buddhist schools.

Is there a difference in detail quality between the small and large sizes? The large size (25 to 30 cm) allows the artisan significantly more surface area to develop the facial expression, robe folds, and throne detail, making the iconographic refinement more apparent at close range. The small size is an excellent devotional piece with correct proportions; the large size is the better choice for a room’s primary altar object or a serious display context.
