Description
Five small vessels, each covered in a different depth of color, demand to be looked at more closely than you expect.
Cloisonné is a metalworking technique with roots in the Byzantine and Near Eastern worlds, introduced to China through trade routes and refined into a distinct craft tradition during the Yuan dynasty. By the Ming period, Beijing had become the recognized center of Chinese cloisonné production, and the craft remains concentrated there today. The technique involves building fine metal wire partitions on a base, filling each enclosed cell with colored enamel paste, then firing the piece and polishing it to a smooth, luminous finish. It is meticulous, sequential work.
This set contains five miniature vases, each handcrafted in Beijing using the traditional cloisonné method. The wire partitions are laid by hand, the colored enamels are filled into each cell individually, and every vase is fired and polished to its final surface. Each vase ships mounted on a small wooden display stand, and all five are presented together in a traditional box.
Set of five vases with individual wooden display stands and a traditional presentation box. Dimensions are not listed for this item. Country of origin: China, handcrafted in Beijing.
The color saturation in fired enamel does not diminish over time the way paint does. These vases are made to hold their surface.
