The snuff bottle as an art form emerged in China during the Qing dynasty, when the use of imported snuff required a vessel adapted to Chinese craft sensibility. Court artisans turned to their finest materials, glass, jade, agate, and crystal, competing to create objects of refinement in a format that fit the palm. By the eighteenth century, the carved crystal snuff bottle had become one of the most demanding tests of the lapidary’s art, each piece requiring weeks of work through the narrow neck.

This set comprises four hand-carved crystal bottles, each fitted with a stopper and spoon. The bodies are carved in relief with traditional motifs: flora, fauna, and classical Chinese landscape imagery. Crystal is worked here into walls thin enough to transmit light, a feat requiring sustained control over the grinding tools. Stoppers are fitted with semi-precious stone tops, each turned to match the neck of its bottle. Approximate height: 6 to 8 cm per bottle. Presented in a fitted box suitable for display or storage.
