Description

The set of 3 artisan wood statuettes in Design 3 presents the Western Pure Land assembly in hand-carved pine: Amitabha Buddha at center flanked by Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara and Mahasthama-prapta, the three figures graduated in height so Amitabha stands above his companions. Finished with natural pigment and lacquer, the set stands as a complete iconographic group on any flat surface.

Each statuette is hand-carved from a single piece of pine, then finished with natural pigment and lacquer to render detail in robes, hands, and faces. The bases are graduated so Amitabha rises at center — the group reads as a formal assembly from any viewing position. Carving detail extends to the pleats of Buddhist robes, the mudra hand positions specific to each figure, and the lotus throne beneath each base. Surface texture alternates between the smooth finish of faces and deliberate grain visible in robe folds. The pine emits a faint natural fragrance. The set stands without additional mounting on flat surfaces.

Place this triptych on a home altar, a shelf, or a desk display surface where the three figures can be seen together. The graduated height arrangement makes Amitabha clearly the primary figure while keeping the group proportionally balanced. In daily Buddhist practice the assembly serves as a focal point for recitation of Amitabha’s name or the nembutsu. Clean with a dry cloth; avoid moisture to preserve the lacquer seal over the painted surface.

Amitabha, the Buddha of Infinite Light, is among the most widely venerated figures in East Asian Buddhism, revered across China, Japan, Korea, Tibet, and Vietnam. In Pure Land iconography he is flanked by Avalokitesvara, the embodiment of compassion, and Mahasthama-prapta, the embodiment of wisdom. This triad has been depicted in carved wood for over a thousand years. The craftspeople behind this set work in the figural carving traditions of Shandong and Fujian provinces, where technique descends through family workshops across multiple generations.

What is the difference between Design 3 and other designs in this series? Design 3 designates a specific combination of facial expression, color palette, and robe detail within the maker’s catalog. Each design variant in the series uses the same iconographic program and carving method, but differs in the color arrangement of the robes, the specific expression rendered on the face, and minor details of the crown and base finish. Buyers who have seen or own another design in the series will find Design 3 distinctive while remaining in the same iconographic tradition.
