Description

The sacred Nepalese prayer wheel in pure 999 silver is an object of weight and precision: a spinning cylinder on a turned metal handle, a mantra sealed inside, a form that the hand finds before the mind arrives at intention. Handcrafted in Nepal from 999/1000 silver, this is among the highest expressions of the Tibetan prayer wheel tradition in terms of material and craft.

The cylinder measures approximately 6 cm in diameter and 8 cm in height, with a total handle length bringing the piece to approximately 22 cm overall. The exterior is worked in repoussé, the silver pushed from behind to raise the Om Mani Padme Hum mantra on the outer surface. The handle is cast and lathe-turned with a groove fitted to the thumb for the spinning motion. The interior holds a wound scroll to the traditional count. Weight runs between 180 and 220 grams, enough that the spinning cylinder carries genuine momentum through the rotation.

Hold the prayer wheel by the handle with the cylinder upright. Rotate it clockwise, which is the direction of the Tibetan tradition, using the momentum of the weighted cylinder to maintain continuous movement. Each full rotation is understood in Tibetan Buddhist practice as equivalent to reciting the Om Mani Padme Hum mantra once, multiplying the practitioner’s intention without requiring articulation of each syllable. The wheel can be turned during walking meditation, sitting practice, or as a devotional act throughout daily activity.

The prayer wheel has been turned by practitioners across Tibet and Nepal for more than a thousand years. Each wheel contains a scroll inscribed with Om Mani Padme Hum, the most widely recited mantra in Tibetan Buddhist practice and the mantra most closely associated with Avalokiteshvara, the bodhisattva of compassion. Silver at 999 purity, selected for its malleability and resistance to tarnish over decades of use, is the material reserved for the most significant devotional objects in this tradition.

What mantra is inside a Tibetan prayer wheel? Each prayer wheel contains a tightly wound paper scroll inscribed with the Om Mani Padme Hum mantra, often repeated thousands of times across the length of the scroll. In Tibetan Buddhist tradition, turning the wheel clockwise releases the prayers contained within it into the surrounding space, multiplying the practitioner’s intention proportional to the number of turns made.
