The prayer wheel, or mani wheel, is one of the most distinctive objects in Tibetan Buddhist practice. It operates on the principle that rotating sacred scripture generates the same spiritual merit as spoken recitation; by this logic, a single revolution sends the mantra outward in all directions at once. Prayer wheels appear throughout the Tibetan world in many forms: hand-held wheels spun during circumambulation of sacred sites, water-driven wheels set in mountain streams, and wind-powered wheels mounted on rooftops. The most commonly used mantra is Om Mani Padme Hum, a six-syllable invocation associated with Avalokiteshvara, the bodhisattva of compassion.

Cast in 990 pure silver, a higher purity than standard 925 sterling, this pendant takes the form of a small cylindrical prayer wheel engraved with Tibetan script. The body rotates around a central axis, and a rolled mantra scroll is housed within. A bail at the top of the axle allows it to be worn on a chain.
