Description

The pure 999 silver dragon totem ring arrives as a hand-engraved adjustable band in 99.9% fine silver, the coiled dragon worked in low relief across the outer face of an approximately 8-millimetre-wide split-shank. Cast and engraved by traditional Chinese silversmithing methods, it sits with satisfying weight on the finger and develops a living patina with years of wear.

The band weighs approximately 6 to 8 grams depending on size. The 999 silver standard, finer than sterling, was reserved historically for ceremonial objects because it holds engraving with exceptional crispness. The dragon’s scales are worked in low relief across the outer face, each line cut by hand rather than stamped, giving the surface a quality that shifts under different light. The interior is burnished smooth. The split-shank design allows adjustment across ring sizes without requiring resizing by a jeweller.

Wear this ring on any finger; the split-shank adjusts to a precise fit with light finger pressure on the shank ends. Because 999 silver is softer than sterling, avoid applying strong lateral force to the band during adjustment. The silver develops a natural patina with wear and exposure to skin chemistry, which deepens the appearance of the engraved detail over time. Polish with a soft silver cloth if a brighter finish is preferred; the patina returns naturally with wear.

The dragon occupies the highest rank in the Chinese symbolic order: not the European beast of destruction but a sovereign force — protector of rivers, bearer of rain, guardian at the threshold between worlds. Chinese silversmiths have worked this figure for over two thousand years, pressing meaning into metal through lost-wax casting and hand-chasing techniques passed from master to apprentice within family workshops. The 999 purity standard was the choice of imperial craftspeople for ceremonial silver because of its superior workability and its capacity to carry fine engraving across a lifetime of wear.

Will 999 silver tarnish? Fine silver at 999 purity tarnishes more slowly than sterling silver because it contains no copper alloy, which is the primary agent of tarnish in sterling. Exposure to sulfur compounds in the air and in skin chemistry will eventually produce a warm patina. This is considered desirable by many wearers as it emphasizes the engraved detail. Regular wear actually slows tarnishing by keeping the surface polished through contact. A soft cloth restores brightness if preferred.
