Description

The premium Chinese calligraphy set is a complete practice kit for traditional brush calligraphy, containing four graduated brushes, a pine-soot ink stick, a ribbed ink stone, a ceramic brush rest, and a dovetail-jointed wooden gift box with a magnetic closure. Everything required to begin is present in one fitted case measuring approximately 34 x 14 x 6 cm.

The ink stick is made by compressing pine soot and hide glue under high pressure, then hand-molding and drying over several weeks, a process unchanged in its essentials since the Song dynasty. The four-inch ribbed ink stone is cut from dense sedimentary rock selected for fine grain, which mills the ink stick to a consistent suspension without abrasion. Four brushes are included, graded from fine-detail work to full-coverage strokes, each with a bamboo handle and a tip of blended animal hair that is firm at the core and soft at the edge. The gift box is dovetail-jointed with a recessed ceramic brush rest fitted into the lid. Complete set weight is approximately 650 grams.

To prepare ink, add a few drops of water to the ink stone and grind the stick in slow, even circles for two to three minutes. The consistency should coat the brush without dripping. Rinse brushes in clean water after each session and reshape the tip before the hair dries. The ink stone can be cleaned with a damp cloth; avoid soap, which alters the grinding surface. The box doubles as a display case between practice sessions.

Chinese brush calligraphy traces its recorded history to the Han dynasty, and the tools included here have remained essentially unchanged across more than two thousand years of refinement. Calligraphy was ranked among the highest arts in Chinese literati culture, practiced by scholars, officials, and emperors. The tools in this set follow forms that were standardized during the Tang and Song dynasties and have been transmitted without significant alteration through guilds in Suzhou and Hangzhou.

Is this set suitable for a complete beginner? Yes. The four brushes are graded by size and stiffness, and the range covers the basic strokes of standard script through the broader movements of running script. The ink stone and stick require no previous knowledge to use. A brief printed guide is included with the set.
