Chinese brush calligraphy traces its recorded history to the Han dynasty, though the tools themselves evolved over more than two thousand years of refinement. The ink stick included here is made by compressing pine soot and hide glue under high pressure, then hand-molding and drying for several weeks: a process unchanged in its essentials since the Song dynasty. The ink stone, ribbed at four inches, is cut from a dense sedimentary rock selected for its fine grain, which mills the ink stick to a consistent, slow-releasing suspension without abrasion.

Four brushes are included, graded from fine detail to full-coverage strokes, each with a bamboo handle and a tip of blended animal hair, firm at the core and soft at the edge, a construction that allows both precision and sweep within a single gesture. The wooden gift box is dovetail-jointed, with a magnetic closure and a recessed ceramic brush rest fitted into the lid. Closed dimensions are approximately 34 cm x 14 cm x 6 cm. The set weighs approximately 650 grams complete.
