Description
Premium Chinese calligraphy, enter the room fully formed: brush, ink stone, ink stick, and paper gathered into one considered set. These are the Four Treasures of the Study, the instruments that shaped Chinese written form for two thousand years.
Shufa, the Chinese discipline of written form, emerged during the Han dynasty and reached its classical heights under the Tang, when masters such as Wang Xizhi established the canon still studied today. The Four Treasures, the brush, the ink stone, the ink stick, and the paper, were considered essential instruments of the educated class and gifts worthy of emperors. The brushes in this set are crafted from bound animal hair; the ink stone from dark slate quarried in Guangdong province, one of the four celebrated ink stone origins in China.
The set includes a goat-hair brush for broad strokes and a wolf-hair brush for fine line work, each mounted on a turned bamboo handle of approximately 28 cm. The Duan-style ink stone measures approximately 12 x 8 cm, with a shallow grinding well and a dry rest platform. An ink stick of pine soot compound and a sheet of practice rice paper complete the set. The presentation case is finished in black lacquer with a fitted silk interior that holds each element in position.
