Description
The Premium Artisan Chinese Calligraphy Set is a complete Four Treasures of the Study (wen fang si bao) kit containing an ink stone, ink stick, graduated calligraphy brushes, and xuan paper, sourced from the historically established production centers in Huzhou, Huizhou, and Guangdong. It is designed for calligraphy practice, painting, and the study of classical Chinese writing arts.
The ink stone measures approximately 12 by 8 cm, made from Guangdong stone known for its fine grain and water retention. The ink stick is produced in Huizhou, Anhui province, using the traditional pine soot and hide glue method. The brushes come in graduated sizes with bamboo handles and natural hair tips, sourced from Huzhou, Zhejiang — the production center for Chinese brushes (bi) since the Song Dynasty. Xuan paper, made from mulberry bark, is included for practice and finished work.
To prepare ink, add a few drops of water to the ink stone well and grind the ink stick in slow circular strokes against the stone surface until the ink reaches working consistency — typically two to five minutes. Load the brush from the stone, holding the brush vertically above the paper. Xuan paper is highly absorbent; strokes cannot be corrected once laid down, which is central to the discipline of the art. Clean brushes with cool water after each session and reshape the tip before storing.
The Four Treasures of the Study (wen fang si bao) — brush, ink, paper, and stone — have been the foundational material culture of Chinese literary and artistic practice since the Tang Dynasty. Each component of this set is produced in a region with centuries of documented specialization: Huzhou brushes (Hu bi) are referenced in Tang-era records; Huizhou ink sticks (Hui mo) are among the most replicated objects in Chinese craft history; Duan stone from Guangdong is the standard against which all other ink stones are measured. Xuan paper (xuan zhi) has been produced in Jing County, Anhui, for over a thousand years.
Is this set appropriate for complete beginners, or is it aimed at more advanced practitioners? The set contains professional-grade materials and is suitable for both beginners who want to start with authentic tools and intermediate practitioners upgrading from student-grade sets. A beginner will find that the quality of the materials — particularly the xuan paper’s responsiveness and the brush’s spring — teaches more rapidly than inferior tools, even though the learning curve of Chinese calligraphy remains steep regardless of equipment.
