Description
Rose and charcoal veins thread through the polished surface in slow, branching patterns, the stone cool and substantial in the hand.
Rhodonite takes its name from the Greek word for rose, rhodon, and has been prized in lapidary traditions across Russia, Australia, and parts of South America for centuries. The stone forms within metamorphic rock under conditions of regional metamorphism, its characteristic pink silicate matrix shot through with dark manganese oxide inclusions that develop only under specific geological pressures over millions of years. In Russian tradition it was known as orletz, the eagle stone, favored for decorative arts and personal objects from the eighteenth century onward, including inlay work in imperial commissions.
This piece is shaped from a single section of natural rhodonite and worked to a smooth, rounded form that fits readily in the palm. The polishing process reveals the full depth of the stone’s coloring, bringing out the contrast between the rose-pink ground and the darker veining threaded through it. The piece has enough weight to be felt clearly when held.
Dimensions vary between individual pieces and are confirmed at point of sale. The stone is solid rhodonite, natural and untreated, with no coatings, dyes, or synthetic enhancements. It is supplied as a single polished piece, sourced from natural deposits in Russia, Australia, or South America.
Rhodonite is a durable mineral, rated 5.5 to 6.5 on the Mohs scale, and holds up well to everyday handling. It is a lasting object, unchanged by use.
