Description

The obsidian Amitabha Buddha pendant is carved from natural black volcanic glass, a material understood in East Asian protective traditions to absorb and clarify. The figure of Amitabha, the Buddha of Infinite Light, is rendered in full relief from a single piece of stone, worn as a pendant of both devotional and protective significance.

Carved from a single piece of natural black obsidian, this pendant presents Amitabha in his characteristic seated posture, hands resting in dhyana mudra, the meditation gesture. The surface is finished to a high polish that catches and releases light as the piece moves. Robe folds, facial features, and the lotus throne are rendered in precise carved detail. The pendant measures approximately 3 to 4 centimetres in height and weighs between 20 and 35 grams. A bail is set at the crown for a chain or cord; the cord is not included but a black waxed cotton cord can be added depending on the model ordered.

Wear this pendant on a cord or chain kept close to the body. In Pure Land Buddhist practice, wearing an image of Amitabha is understood as an act of continuous invocation, keeping the figure in proximity as a reminder and protection throughout the day. The pendant’s weight and the smooth polished surface make it comfortable for extended wear.

Amitabha, the Buddha of the western direction, presides over the Pure Land tradition practiced across China, Japan, Vietnam, and Korea. He is associated with compassion, transformation, and the capacity to receive, invoked at thresholds and carried by those navigating change. Black obsidian, formed at the volcanic edge where fire meets cold air, has been used in protective objects across East Asian and Tibetan traditions for millennia, prized for its density and the depth of its surface.

How is the obsidian for this pendant sourced? This pendant is carved from natural black obsidian of Chinese origin, hand-cut and finished by artisans using diamond-tipped tools. Each carving is inspected before dispatch. As a naturally occurring volcanic glass, no two pieces carry identical surface grain or depth of sheen.
