Description

The obsidian Amitabha Buddha pendant is carved from volcanic glass that has been used in protective objects for millennia. Dark, dense, and smooth to the touch, it carries its meaning without ornamentation.

Amitabha, the Buddha of Infinite Light, presides over the Pure Land tradition across China, Japan, Vietnam, and Korea. He is the Buddha of the western direction, associated with transformation, compassion, and the capacity to receive. Invoked at thresholds and carried by those navigating change, he is one of the most widely venerated figures in Mahayana Buddhism. Black obsidian, formed at the volcanic edge, has been understood in East Asian and Tibetan traditions as a material that absorbs and clarifies.

Carved from a single piece of natural black obsidian, this pendant presents Amitabha in his characteristic seated posture, hands resting in meditation mudra, the surface finished to a high polish that catches and releases light as the piece moves. The figure is carved in full relief, with the robe’s folds, facial features, and lotus throne rendered in precise detail. The pendant measures approximately 3 to 4 cm in height. Weight ranges from 20 to 35 grams. A bail is set at the crown for chain or cord.
