Description
The Mystica UnderWater pendant is a handcrafted wearable object that holds a miniature ocean landscape sealed inside a dome of layered casting resin, mounted on a turned sandalwood base. It belongs to a tradition of contained natural forms found across Asian craft, from Chinese scholar’s rocks to Balinese amber carvings, and extends that tradition into wearable scale.
The pendant body is built from casting resin poured in successive layers during curing. Color, texture, and fine detail are placed at different depths within the material, creating the impression of looking down through water: turquoise shallows deepening to dark ocean below. The sandalwood base is shaped and smoothed by hand, its warm amber grain providing a material counterpoint to the cool translucency of the resin. A metal bail set into the upper resin allows the pendant to hang from a cord or chain, both sold separately. Each piece is individually made; dimensions vary slightly between pieces.
Worn as a pendant on a cord or fine chain, the Mystica UnderWater sits well at collarbone or chest length. The resin body is light, making it comfortable for extended daily wear. The sandalwood base rests flat against the chest, grounding the piece. Because no two are made from the same pour, the piece you receive is unrepeatable.
The miniature landscape tradition runs through Chinese scholar’s rock culture, Japanese netsuke, and Balinese resin carving, all sharing the principle that a natural world compressed into a small held form carries a particular kind of attention. The Mystica series applies this principle using resin as the medium, a material that permits layered internal depth impossible in carved stone or wood. The sandalwood base draws on South and Southeast Asian woodcraft, where the wood has been shaped and worn for millennia, prized as much for its mild fragrance as its warm grain.
Will the resin discolor over time? The resin used in the Mystica series is UV-stabilized, which means it resists yellowing under normal light exposure, including daily wear outdoors. Avoiding prolonged direct sunlight storage will preserve the depth of color in the pendant for years.
