Description
This handcrafted sandalwood Heart Sutra tablet enters a room as both object and text. The amber grain of the wood carries its natural fragrance without treatment, a scent that deepens faintly with handling over time and requires no oil or finishing to sustain.
Sandalwood has been the preferred medium for sacred Buddhist carving across South and East Asia for more than two thousand years. The Prajnaparamita Hridaya, the Heart Sutra, is the compressed essence of Mahayana Buddhist philosophy: 260 characters in Chinese carrying the tradition’s central insight on emptiness and perception. In Chinese Buddhist practice, the sutra is carved on tablets, brushed on scrolls, and pressed into lacquer as a focal object for daily recitation. This piece follows the carving tradition of Yunnan and Sichuan provinces.
The tablet measures approximately 30 centimetres in height and 12 centimetres in width, with a depth of two centimetres sufficient to stand without a mount. The carving is incised rather than relief-cut, each character cut cleanly to a consistent depth across the full text face. The reverse is smooth-planed and signed by the carver. The wood is untreated: its natural resins sustain the fragrance for years and protect against indoor humidity without additional treatment. A fitted display stand in matching sandalwood is included.
