Description
The handcrafted sandalwood Heart Sutra tablet presents the Prajnaparamita Hridaya — 260 Chinese characters, the compressed essence of Mahayana Buddhist philosophy — incised by hand into natural sandalwood. The tablet stands approximately 30 centimetres tall and 12 centimetres wide, enters a room with its natural fragrance, and requires no treatment to sustain it.
The carving is incised rather than relief-cut: each of the 260 characters is cut cleanly to a consistent depth across the full text face. The wood is natural sandalwood, untreated, its resins sustaining the fragrance for years without oil or finishing and protecting against indoor humidity without additional treatment. The reverse is smooth-planed and signed by the carver. A fitted display stand in matching sandalwood is included. Dimensions are approximately 30 x 12 x 2 centimetres, with depth sufficient to stand without a mount. Weight is approximately 200 grams.
Stand the tablet on a desk, altar shelf, or meditation surface using the included sandalwood display stand. The text face reads from the standing position at normal desk or altar height. In Buddhist practice, the tablet serves as a focal object during recitation of the Heart Sutra; it can also simply be placed as a devotional object in a room used for reading or quiet work. Clean with a dry cloth. A light application of linseed oil will condition the wood if desired, though the natural resins make this optional.
The Prajnaparamita Hridaya has been one of the most copied, carved, and recited texts in Mahayana Buddhism for over fifteen centuries. In Chinese Buddhist practice, it is inscribed on tablets, brushed on scrolls, and pressed into lacquer as a focal object for daily recitation. Sandalwood has been the preferred medium for sacred Buddhist carving across South and East Asia for more than two thousand years, valued for its ability to hold fine carving without fracturing, age without rot, and release fragrance for years after shaping. This piece follows the carving tradition of Yunnan and Sichuan provinces.
How is this sandalwood Heart Sutra tablet different from a printed version? The carved tablet is a three-dimensional object made by hand, character by character: the time, skill, and material are embedded in the object itself in a way that a printed text cannot replicate. The natural sandalwood carries fragrance and tactile warmth. As a physical anchor for recitation or contemplation, the carved form engages sight, touch, and scent simultaneously in a way that a printed card or scroll does not.
