Description
The Guan Yu copper statue presents the deified general of the Three Kingdoms period in cast copper alloy, a form that has stood in Chinese homes and merchant halls for two thousand years. Cast using the lost-wax method and finished with a warm patinated surface, this figure brings the authority of one of China’s most continuously venerated figures into a domestic or commercial space.
The statue stands approximately 25 centimeters, cast in solid copper alloy using the lost-wax method. The surface carries a warm patinated finish: the copper is oxidized to deepen the tonal range from amber to dark ochre. Individual scales of armor are distinct under the hand, the facial expression combining composure and vigilance. Weight is significant, grounding the piece against any surface it occupies. A lacquered wood base is included, raising the figure and protecting the surface below.
Guan Yu is traditionally placed at the threshold of a business, in the entrance of a home, or on a dedicated altar. In Taoist practice, his image faces the entrance, positioned to address anyone entering the space. The lacquered wood base allows direct placement on any flat surface without additional mounting. The weight of copper ensures the figure holds its position without movement.
Guan Yu was a historical general of the Han dynasty, canonized across Chinese culture as a deity of righteousness, fidelity, and martial protection. Taoist and Buddhist temples across mainland China, Taiwan, and Southeast Asia maintain shrines dedicated to him. Merchants have placed his image at the threshold of commerce for centuries, understanding it as both protection and ethical reminder. The lost-wax copper casting tradition, practiced in workshops across Henan and Shanxi provinces, brings out the detail of his armor and the commanding stillness of his posture.
A common question is whether the patinated copper finish will continue to change over time. Copper oxidizes gradually in indoor environments, and the surface color will shift slowly toward deeper ochre and green tones over years. This natural patination is consistent with how copper has aged on temple figures across centuries. If the original warm amber tone is preferred, a light application of copper wax or paste can slow the process. No sealing is required; the patina is protective in itself.
