Description

An ebony wood Bodhisattva Guanyin statue is a hand-carved figurative sculpture in genuine ebony hardwood depicting the Chinese Bodhisattva of Compassion. Produced in the carving workshops of Fujian and Guangdong provinces, these statues are placed on home altars, meditation room shelves, or display surfaces where the density and depth of the ebony itself commands attention before any detail is examined.

The statue is carved by hand from genuine ebony (Diospyros ebenum), one of the densest hardwoods commercially worked, with a Janka hardness rating exceeding 3,000 lbf. The surface is finished with natural oil only — no lacquer or artificial tinting — allowing the wood’s own near-black heartwood color and low luster to come forward. Available in multiple heights; one common version measures approximately 20 cm and weighs approximately 600 grams. The base is flat and stable on any level surface. Robes are carved with defined folds worked by chisel, and the face is rendered with specific attention to the expression of composure and openness characteristic of the iconographic standard.

Place the statue on a flat, stable surface at a height where it can be seen directly — a low shelf, altar table, or desk is appropriate. Ebony does not require any special maintenance in normal indoor conditions; the natural oil finish will hold for years without reapplication. If the surface appears dry, a very small amount of natural furniture oil applied with a soft cloth and buffed away will restore the depth of the grain. Keep away from direct heating vents, which can cause splitting in dense hardwoods over time.

Guanyin is the Bodhisattva of Compassion, venerated across Chinese, Vietnamese, Korean, and Japanese Buddhist traditions for more than fifteen centuries. The iconography originates in the Indian figure of Avalokiteshvara, which entered China during the Tang dynasty and took the feminine form most familiar today: robed, composed, bearing a vessel of compassion. Artisans in Fujian and Zhejiang provinces have carved Guanyin in hardwood for generations, working within a tradition that prizes stillness of expression above surface ornament. Ebony, valued for its near-black heartwood and exceptional density, has become the preferred material for figures intended to remain unchanged across lifetimes.

Is ebony a sustainable material? Genuine ebony (Diospyros ebenum) is subject to CITES regulations due to past over-harvesting. Responsible sourcing from certified workshops is important; well-regarded suppliers work with certified timber or reclaimed stock. When purchasing, look for provenance details or certification from the seller.
