Guanyin is the Bodhisattva of compassion, venerated across Chinese, Vietnamese, Korean, and Japanese Buddhist traditions for more than fifteen centuries. The iconography originates in the Indian figure of Avalokiteshvara and was carried through Tang dynasty China into the feminine form most familiar today: robed, serene, bearing a vessel of compassion. Artisans in China’s Fujian and Zhejiang provinces have carved Guanyin in hardwood for generations, working within a tradition that prizes stillness of expression above ornament. Ebony, valued for its near-black heartwood and exceptional density, became the preferred material for figures intended to remain unchanged across lifetimes.

The statue is hand-carved from genuine ebony, a hardwood with a Janka rating exceeding 3,000 lbf, placing it among the hardest commercially worked timbers available. The surface is worked to a deep, smooth finish that requires no lacquer: ebony’s natural oils bring the grain to a low luster under the carver’s tool. Available in multiple heights, each figure depicts Guanyin in classic seated or standing posture, robes falling in precise folds, the expression composed and specific. Weight varies by height but remains substantial throughout the range. The base is flat and stable on any level surface.
