Description

The ceramic stacked-stones backflow incense burner is a hand-formed stoneware piece designed to produce a downward cascade of incense smoke across a sculpted arrangement of layered stone forms. At once a functional incense holder and a decorative object, it suits a meditation space, home altar, desk, or display shelf where the visual movement of smoke will be noticed and appreciated.

Hand-formed in glazed stoneware with layered color glazes applied before high-temperature firing, this burner measures approximately 19.5 cm in length and 8.6 cm in height and weighs 400 grams. The upper cone chamber sits above a hollow channel carved into the primary stone form; the shallow basin at the base collects descending smoke and can hold a thin layer of fine sand or water. Each firing produces slight surface variation in color and texture, making each piece individual. Compatible with backflow incense cones only.

Place the burner on a flat, stable surface indoors. Light a backflow incense cone, seat it in the aperture above the channel, and allow the smoke to build before it begins flowing downward. The cascade is most visible in still air — avoid positioning the burner near open windows or air vents. The basin at the base can hold water or fine sand to anchor the visual effect and catch any residual ash. The burner can also function as a small planter when not in use for incense.

The stones motif draws from Chan Buddhist garden aesthetics, where the deliberate arrangement of rock forms is a practice with both aesthetic and philosophical dimensions. In Japanese rock gardens derived from this tradition, stones are often grouped in triads with layered symbolic meaning. Artisan workshops in Jingdezhen — the city in China’s Jiangxi province that has produced refined ceramics for over a thousand years — supply this piece, working within a tradition of glazed ceramic ritual objects that runs deep in Chinese craft history.

Can this burner be used outdoors? Technically yes, but the backflow effect requires still air to work. Any breeze will disperse the descending smoke before it reaches the base, eliminating the cascade entirely. This burner performs best indoors in a draught-free environment.
