Description
Rest the bowl in the palm and run the striker around the rim: a tone rises, intensifies, and opens into harmonics. This is not a fixed pitch. It is a living vibration whose quality shifts with pressure, speed, and the diameter of the bowl. Larger bowls produce a lower fundamental and a longer sustain.
Tibetan singing bowls have been forged in Nepal for centuries, originally for use in monastery practice. These come from a Nepalese workshop in the Kathmandu Valley where smiths inherit both the alloy ratios and the hammering sequences from their teachers. The seven-metal alloy — gold, silver, copper, iron, tin, lead, and zinc fused into one vessel — gives the bowl its overtone complexity: a fundamental tone accompanied by two audible harmonics that emerge as the striker completes its circuit. The golden color comes from hand-polishing the copper-brass alloy against the raw metal, not from paint or coating. No two hand-forged bowls are identical.
This bowl measures 13 cm in diameter and stands 6 cm tall. Wall thickness varies slightly around the circumference, the natural result of hand hammering. Weight is approximately 550 grams: substantial enough to rest without slipping, light enough to hold in one hand. The exterior carries a warm golden patina with visible hammer marks; the interior is smoother, polished to sustain vibration. A wooden striker with wrapped leather and a hand-stitched cushion ring are included.
