Description
The black obsidian Pixiu feng shui pendant is carved from natural volcanic glass, one of the most precisely charged objects in Chinese protective tradition. The Pixiu, a mythological creature with the power to accumulate wealth and repel harmful forces, has been carved in stone and worn as a pendant across China since the Han Dynasty.
This pendant is hand-carved from natural black obsidian, a volcanic glass formed when silica-rich lava cools rapidly at the earth’s surface. Its absolute opacity and mirror-dark surface allow carved detail to read clearly against the stone. The piece measures approximately 3 to 4 centimetres in length and weighs between 10 and 15 grams. The mounting loop is set in base metal, suitable for pairing with a cord or chain sold separately.
Wear this pendant close to the body, looped on a black cord or thin chain, keeping the Pixiu facing outward. In feng shui practice, the figure is positioned to face the entrance of a space or the direction of incoming wealth. As a pendant, it is worn with the same intent: oriented to receive and retain.
The Pixiu has been a continuous subject for Chinese jewelers and lapidaries for more than two thousand years. In Chinese feng shui tradition, it is associated specifically with financial accumulation, believed to bring wealth in without letting it leave. Black obsidian carries its own significance in East Asian protective traditions, prized for its depth and density as a material understood to absorb and redirect negative influences.
Does the Pixiu need to be cleansed before wearing? In traditional Chinese practice, a newly acquired Pixiu pendant is cleansed by rinsing under running water and then placing it in direct sunlight for several hours before first use, to clear prior energies and attune it to its new owner.
