Description
This egg-shaped obsidian stone settles into the palm with a dense, cool weight, heavier than it looks, smooth to the touch, its surface uniformly black and faintly glassy, absorbing ambient light rather than scattering it.
Obsidian has been shaped by human hands for thousands of years. Mesoamerican cultures, among them the Aztec and Maya, fashioned it into cutting tools, ceremonial blades, and polished mirrors used in divination. Across ancient Anatolia, the Mediterranean, and parts of East Asia, obsidian nodules were among the earliest traded materials, valued for their edge and their darkness. The volcanic glass carried significance wherever fire and water were understood as elemental forces.
The ovoid form is achieved through grinding and hand-polishing, bringing the volcanic glass to a smooth, reflective finish. Obsidian forms when silica-rich lava meets cold water rapidly, quenching before any crystal lattice can develop. The result is an amorphous glass, dense and brittle at its edges, with a characteristic conchoidal fracture and no internal structure. This piece shows no inclusions or visible banding, presenting as solid matte-black with a subdued sheen.
Each stone measures approximately 4 to 5 centimeters along its longest axis and weighs between 80 and 130 grams; natural variation means no two pieces are identical in exact size or weight. The material is untreated volcanic glass. No cord, setting, or pendant hardware is included, and this is supplied as a standalone hand stone.
Black obsidian is associated in lapidary and metaphysical traditions with grounding, protection, and clarity. Each piece is a natural formation and will differ slightly in surface texture, sheen, and precise dimensions from the photograph shown.
