Description
Amitabha buddha pine wood carries a warmth that registers the moment you set it down. Three figures carved from a single regional pine, grain unbroken across each form, surfaces burnished to a quiet honey glow.
Amitabha, the Buddha of Infinite Light, presides at the center of the Pure Land tradition, one of the most widely practiced streams of East Asian Buddhism. This triptych presents Amitabha flanked by his two attendants, Avalokiteshvara and Mahasthamaprapta, as described in the Contemplation Sutra. The carvers work in Fujian Province, China, where wood-sculpture guilds have operated continuously since the Tang dynasty. Pine from managed highland forests is chosen for its tight grain, resistance to splitting, and the honey color it develops over decades. The forms follow proportional canons transmitted master to apprentice over many generations.
The central Amitabha stands approximately 20 cm; the flanking bodhisattvas are proportionally smaller, creating a natural visual hierarchy. All three figures rest on carved lotus bases that are integral to the form, not attached as separate pieces. The carving is executed in the round, meaning the reverse is finished: the set can face any direction. Surface treatment is a light natural wax applied by hand, which feeds the wood and deepens the color over time. The pine retains its scent for several years. The three figures arrive in a fitted presentation box.
