Description

The Amitabha Buddha pine wood set is a hand-carved triptych depicting Amitabha flanked by his two bodhisattva attendants, Avalokiteshvara and Mahasthamaprapta, as described in the Contemplation Sutra. Three figures carved from highland pine by artisans working in the Fujian Province tradition, surfaces burnished to a warm honey tone, sold as a set in a fitted presentation box.

The carvers work in Fujian Province, where wood-sculpture guilds have operated in documented continuity since the Tang dynasty. Highland pine is chosen for its tight grain, resistance to splitting, and the warm honey color it develops over decades of exposure to light. The central Amitabha stands approximately 20 cm; the flanking bodhisattvas are proportionally smaller, creating a natural visual hierarchy. All three figures rest on carved lotus bases integral to the form. The carving is executed in the round: the reverse side is finished, so the set can face any direction. Surface treatment is a light natural wax applied by hand, which feeds the wood and deepens the color with time. The pine retains its scent for several years after carving.

Arrange the triptych on an altar, a shelf, or a dedicated flat surface, with Amitabha at center and the two bodhisattvas on either side as tradition places them. The set requires no mount or stand beyond the integral lotus bases. Dust occasionally with a dry soft cloth. The natural wax finish requires no reapplication under normal conditions. The fitted box can be used as a transport or storage case when the figures need to be moved.

Amitabha is the presiding Buddha of the Pure Land tradition, one of the most widely practiced streams of East Asian Buddhism. Avalokiteshvara and Mahasthamaprapta are his two principal attendants in the Pure Land cosmology, representing compassion and wisdom respectively. The iconographic grouping follows proportional canons derived from the Contemplation Sutra, transmitted master to apprentice across many generations of Fujian woodcarvers.

Can pine wood Buddhist figures be placed outdoors? No. Pine absorbs moisture and will check, discolor, and eventually crack with sustained outdoor exposure. These figures are made for interior use. Keep them away from direct sunlight over long periods, which will fade the natural wax finish and accelerate surface checking in the wood.
