Description
The Amitabha Buddha and bodhisattvas pine wood set presents three hand-carved figures as a complete triptych: Amitabha at center, Avalokitesvara and Mahasthamaprapta at his sides. Carved from kiln-dried pine and finished with hand-applied paint and gilding, this Design 5 set fills an altar shelf or display niche with the quiet authority of fourteen centuries of Chinese Buddhist iconographic tradition.
Each figure stands approximately 20 to 25 centimetres tall. The pine is tight-grained and kiln-dried for resistance to warping, then carved in the round so each figure reads fully from multiple viewing angles, not only from the front. Paint and gilding are hand-applied at the robes, crown, and mudra details. The base of each figure is fitted with a felt pad. Design 5 designates a specific facial expression set and color arrangement within the maker’s catalog, distinguishing it from plainer or more elaborate variants in the same triptych series.
Place the set on a home altar, a dedicated shelf, or a display surface at eye level or above where the faces are visible. The three figures are intended as a standing assembly: Amitabha at center reads as the primary figure, the bodhisattvas to each side providing formal balance. The pine emits a faint natural fragrance that diminishes slowly over time. Clean with a dry cloth only; avoid moisture.
The Amitabha Pure Land tradition traces its textual roots to the Larger Sukhavativyuha Sutra, which describes a western realm of infinite light presided over by Amitabha, the Buddha of boundless illumination. He is flanked in canonical iconography by Avalokitesvara, the bodhisattva of compassion, and Mahasthamaprapta, the power of wisdom. Chinese woodcarvers have rendered this triad since the Tang dynasty, working in pine and camphor for their workability and receptiveness to paint and gilding. The sculptors behind this set work in the woodcarving guild tradition of Fujian province.
What size altar or shelf does this triptych require? Each figure stands approximately 20 to 25 centimetres tall with a base footprint of approximately 5 by 5 centimetres. The three figures together require a shelf approximately 20 to 25 centimetres wide to stand in a row with a small gap between each piece. A standard altar shelf, bedside table, or display cabinet shelf provides adequate space. The set does not require a wall mount or stand beyond a flat horizontal surface.
